Month Sillies
We have been in Kenya for 6 months, so
we thought it would be appropriate to do a "6 Month Sillies" blog. We would like to share our new normal with you……..

Knowing when to say “Supa” or “Sopa”??? They both mean hello in Samburu, depending on which family you are speaking to.

A care package from home is the glue that holds it all together!
Dust can multiply and accumulate at light-speed on the average Kenyan person, especially during travel.
Leaning to tell when someone is knocking at our gate or the neighbors gate – they all sound the same and even our dog, Eve, can’t tell the difference (she barks at everyone).

Developing and fine-tuning a pump system to get water from the outside water tank into the shower tank. And filling the shower tank every other day.
Learning to ration our water to last for one week or more and still take a shower.
Coming to the realization that parts of Africa are NOT hot! Maralal is freezing!

Truly knowing that God is in control. Learning to talk with Him daily and pray for discernment.
Learning to read and write emails super-fast because the internet is unreliable. This month is was running from 10pm to 10am.
Learning that the availability of certain food. Sometimes we can buy canned tuna for days and then it’s unavailable for months.
Learning that the “Super Duka” doesn’t have cheese, but they have 10 cases of Red Bull???

Most water is not safe to drink,
but most communities drink it anyway.
We have learned the saying “Water is water.” This is not silly.
Developing and fine-tuning a pump system to get water from the outside water tank into the shower tank. And filling the shower tank every other day.

Being thankful for the rain so we
can harvest it!
Knowing that God sent us here to be a blessing among the Samburu tribe!
A mosquito net can become a beautiful, princess canopy (at least in theory).
Learning that when someone says, “It’s
not far”, it can mean it’s REALLY far, especially if you are walking.

Learning that the 3 wool blankets we have on our bed will take at least 3 days to dry. Finding alternatives to using wool blankets on our beds.
Getting a full-body workout, while
sitting in the seat, riding on a matatu.
Praising God for asphalt!
Becoming a member of Weight Watchers Malaria - Nick lost 20 pounds and Gilly lost 10 when they had malaria.

Praying for you lots during this "6 month" time period. Lord protect and keep this wonderful family as they work with you in Kenya and help them to keep such a positive attitude about their "new normal". I hope I can keep learning from you all and do the same.
