Our First Week in Kenya

"Jambo", hello from Kenya! Our first week has been amazing!  I don't know where to start and there is so much to tell and we have a lot of pictures.

Heidi learned how to make chapati from Lucy (Pastor Simon's wife) and Zafora (Lucy's sister). We helped make dinner by cooking chapati on a Jiko (a traditional African stove) and filtering some water with our new Sawyer system.  Our host families, Pastor Simon and Lucy, and Pastor Julius and Nancy have been amazing and we give many thanks to God for them.  They have opened their homes ans hearts to us.

We had the opportunity to attend one of the local churches in Nyahururu this Sunday and it was GREAT.  The worship style was a little different for us but there was an out pouring of love from the congregation. Take a look at the video below.... It's always a blessing when I hear God's name praised in new ways.  The kids loved Gilly and he attended the childrens' gathering outside for some of the service (spoken in Kikuyu, Simon's tribal language).

The next day we headed out to Maralal (a town in the Samburu), this is where we will begin our ministry.  The ride to Maralal was filled with breath taking scenery including zebras, ostriches, gazzells, camels and giraffes. WOW!

It's a very bumpy ride and the roads have huge potholes.  I got a pretty good abdominal work-out trying to stay in my seat.  It's the dry season right now and the roads are extremely dusty.  We had to wear our shirts like masks to keep the dust out of our lungs. Heidi and Gilly said I looked like a militant. LOL  Below is a picture of the Matatu (bus) that we rode from Nyahururu to Maralal - a 5 hour trip!

After a dusty ride back to Nyahururu, there was only one thing left to do: LAUNDRY.  Heidi had a chance to try out her new washboard and she loved it!  This was a great time for us to work on our Swahili and learn about our clothes.

Our first week in Kenya has been a blessing. Heidi, Gilly and I are learning language, culture and a lot of new Kenyan skills.
We hope you enjoyed our first week and thanks for your prayers and support.  We miss you and love you and we praise God for calling us to this wonderful place.  Stayed tuned for more pictures and videos........
